Grosswendern

is located in the valley of the Wendern Brook. In 1356 it was mentioned first in a record as a property of the Castle Epprechtstein. In 1818 the village became a independent political municipalty. At that time it consisted in 44 houses and 50 adjacent buildings and had 246 inhabitants. It became part of Marktleuthen by a territory reform in 1978. In 1957 they built their own church, the "resurrection-church".
In present the village has about 500 inhabitants. There are some imposing farms, most built in the 19th century and beside the rustic village center there growed some residential buildings in the last decades. North of the village there is located an castle-stable, but in these days you can see only mounds and diggings.
